The Town Board recently discussed an inquiry from a Town resident who did not hear warning sirens during a severe weather event and wondered about placing sirens out in the Township. The Town Board decided that the cost of sirens throughtout the Township would be prohibitive, but did want to pass along the following advice:
Warning sirens are mainly intended to notify people who are are outdoors that they should head to shelter and seek additional information. It can be difficult to hear the sirens while you are indoors, especially during a severe weather event. Newer homes have a lot of soundproofing built into them, especially with windows closed and fans/air conditioning running.
Everyone is encouraged to have multiple ways to receive alerts. More effective options for those inside a home/building include:
- A NOAA Weather Radio (with battery backup)
- Ensuring Wireless Emergency Alerts are eanbled on your cell phone
- Signing up for weather alerts from Dane County's emergency notification system: https://em.countyofdane.com/emergency-alerts
