How do I register to vote?

New Voter Public Access(on the Government Accountability Web site): Check to see if/where you are currently registered to vote.  Information also includes what voting districts you belong to, current office holders, sample ballot, and even which elections you have previously voted in!

If a check of the Voter Public Access site above shows you are not currently registered in the Town of Cottage Grove, your options are:

  • Register in person (prior to an election): Voter registration must be done in the office of the municipal clerk prior to 5:00 p.m. on the 3rd Wednesday preceding the election in order for the person’s name to be included on the voter registration list. No names may be added to the registration list after the close of registration; however late registrations may be accepted in the office of the municipal clerk, who shall issue a certificate addressed to the election inspectors stating that the elector shall be allowed to vote.

  • Register in person (on election day): If you wish to register to vote at your polling place on election day, you must bring proof that you have lived at your present location for 10 days preceding the election. Acceptable proof of residence must give your complete name and address, and may include a Wisconsin driver’s license. Click Here for more acceptable forms of Proof of Residence.

If you register on election day and have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license, you must provide the number on your registration form. If you do not have the driver’s license number with you, or refuse to provide the number, you may vote a provisional ballot, but you must then provide the number to the municipal clerk by 4:00 the next afternoon in order for your vote to be counted. If you do not have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license, you may provide the last 4 digits of your social security number or your Wisconsin ID card number, and you will be permitted to vote.

  • Register by mail: Any elector may register before the close of registration (3rd Wednesday prior to the election) for any election, as follows: Download the Application for Voter Registration, complete and mail it to:
Town of Cottage Grove - Municipal Clerk
    4058 County Road N
    Cottage Grove, WI 53527

PLEASE NOTE: As of January 1, 2003, the federal "Help America Vote Act of 2002" requires any person registering to vote for the first time and submitting a registration application by mail to provide a copy of acceptable proof of residence. If a copy of proof of residence is not included, the elector will be required to supply proof of residence before being issued a ballot.
